There are so many emotional moments woven into a wedding day. From the walk down the aisle, to the vows, and the first dance. However, the one that always tugs at my heartstrings in the most tender way is the father’s first look with the bride!
As a wedding photographer, I’ve been lucky enough to witness dozens of these moments over the years. And, every single one is completely unique, full of emotion, and truly unforgettable. There’s something incredibly powerful about the second a dad turns around and sees his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time. I imagine there are so many thoughts running through the dad’s mind as he turns around. Is he thinking of the first time he held her? Is he remembering when they used to dance around the kitchen in her princess costume? They have been through so many life changes together as a family and now it’s time for her to begin her own family journey. Sometimes there are happy tears. Sometimes stunned silence. And, sometimes the biggest bear hug you’ve ever seen! No matter how it unfolds, it’s always pure magic.
A father’s first look is a private moment between the bride and her dad before the ceremony. Typically done after the bride is fully dressed and ready, and before she heads to see her groom or walk down the aisle. It’s a beautiful way to set aside just a few quiet, intentional minutes for the two of them to connect before the whirlwind of the day begins.
This is one of those moments that often doesn’t make it into traditional wedding timelines. But, when it does, it becomes one of the most meaningful memories of the day. Whether you’re super close with your dad or just want to honor the journey you’ve shared, the father’s first look is a time to pause, hug, laugh (or cry), and say all the things that might be too hard to squeeze in later. It’s also a powerful reminder that weddings aren’t just about the couple. They’re about families, transitions, and generations of love showing up in quiet, powerful ways.
Favorite Father’s First Look Moments
Over the years, I feel incredibly honored to have captured some truly beautiful first look moments. In this blog post, I wanted to share just a few of my favorites with you! From proud smiles and misty eyes to full-on sobs and joyful laughter, these images speak louder than words ever could. Each of these moments tells a story of love, of pride, and of that “I can’t believe this day is here” feeling. As a photographer, these are the shots I treasure most. Because while flowers wilt and dresses are packed away, the emotions captured in a father’s first look will last forever.
If you’re a bride-to-be considering whether to include a first look with your dad, here’s my vote: yes! (I go into more details on why I’m pro-first look in this blog post). It doesn’t have to be long or overly posed. We’ll carve out 10 minutes in your timeline, find a spot with privacy and great lighting, and let the moment unfold. I’ll be there, camera in hand (and probably holding back tears right along with you).
If you’re a past bride and shared a first look with your dad, I’d love to hear what that moment meant to you! And, if you’re planning your wedding now and wondering whether or not to include it… let this be your sign!
